Should I let Chrome or Safari save my passwords?
It is better than reusing passwords, but a browser only works on its own devices and anyone using your computer may get in. A vault works everywhere.
It is better than reusing the same password everywhere. But a browser keeps your passwords tied to that one browser, and anyone who can use your computer may be able to open them. A password vault works on every device and is locked with a password only you know.
What is wrong with browser passwords?
- They stay in one browser. Passwords saved in Safari are hard to use on a Windows computer or an Android phone.
- Anyone at your computer may get in. If your computer is not locked, someone else can often see or use your saved passwords.
- They only hold passwords. No safe place for notes, card numbers or ID details.
- No plan for emergencies. There is no simple way for a trusted person to help if you are ill.
Can I bring my browser passwords into a vault?
Yes. You can import your passwords from Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox in a few minutes. Afterwards, turn off the browser's own password saving, so you only have one list.
Will passwords still fill in by themselves?
Yes. The Bitwarden app fills in passwords on your phone and computer. See how autofill works.
After importing, delete the passwords from the browser too. Then nobody can find them there.
