Family plan

How do I share a password with my family?

On the Family plan, move an item into the "Family shared" folder in the Bitwarden app. Everyone in your family can then see and use it.

On the Family plan, everyone in your family can see one shared folder, called "Family shared". Anything you put in it can be used by everyone in the family.

Good things to share are the Wi-Fi password, streaming services, or the electricity account.

Before you start

  • You need to be on the Family plan, and have joined the family.
  • Everything else in your vault stays private. Only items you move into "Family shared" are shared.

Share a password you already saved

  1. Open the Bitwarden app and unlock your vault.
  2. Find the item you want to share and tap it.
  3. Look for the option to share it, sometimes called Move to organization or Assign to collections. It may be under the three dots menu.
  4. Choose your family.
  5. Tick Family shared.
  6. Tap Save or Move.

The item now lives in "Family shared". It will appear for everyone in your family within a few moments.

The menu names change a little between the phone app, the browser extension and the web vault at https://secure-vault.dankore.com. If you cannot find the option, try the web vault on a computer.

Save a new shared password

  1. Tap the button to add a new item, usually a + sign.
  2. Fill in the name, username and password.
  3. Where it asks who owns the item, choose your family instead of yourself.
  4. Tick Family shared.
  5. Tap Save.

Change or stop sharing

  • If anyone changes a shared password, it changes for everyone.
  • If you no longer want to share an item, make a copy in your own vault and delete the shared one.

Once an item is in "Family shared", everyone in the family can see it. Only share what you are happy for all of them to see.

An honest note

To add family members automatically, our system holds the key to the "Family shared" folder. Your own vault is different: only you can open it.

So please keep your most private items, like your bank or your email, in your own vault. See how the Family plan works.

If someone is removed from the family, they lose the shared folder at once. Their own vault stays theirs for 30 more days.
