How do I save a new password in my vault?

Add a password by hand in the Bitwarden app, or let the app offer to save it when you sign in to a website. Here is how.

Each password you save is called an item or a login. It holds the website, your username and your password together.

Add a password by hand

  1. Open the Bitwarden app and unlock your vault.
  2. Tap the button to add a new item. It is usually a + sign.
  3. Choose Login if the app asks what kind of item.
  4. In Name, type something you will recognise, like "Bank" or "Gmail".
  5. In Username, type the email or name you use to sign in to that website.
  6. In Password, type the password.
  7. In Website (sometimes called URI), type the website address, like "chase.com".
  8. Tap Save.

That is it. Your new item is now in your vault, and on your other devices too.

Adding the website address helps the app fill in the password for you later. See fill in passwords automatically.

Let the app save it for you

On a computer with the browser extension, Bitwarden often notices when you sign in to a website. A small bar appears near the top asking if you want to save the password.

  1. Sign in to the website as usual.
  2. When the bar appears, click Save.

Other things you can keep

Your vault is not only for passwords. When you add a new item, you can also choose:

  • Secure note: private notes, like a Wi-Fi password or a door code.
  • Card: your bank card details, for shopping online.
  • Identity: your name, address and phone, for filling in forms.

You can also attach a file to an item, like a photo of an important document.

Change a saved password

  1. Find the item in your vault and tap it.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Change the password.
  4. Tap Save.

Always change the password on the website itself first, then update it in your vault.
