How do I make a strong new password?

Your vault has a password generator. It makes a long, random password and saves it for you, so you never need to remember it.

A strong password is long, random, and used on only one website. Making one up yourself is hard. Your vault can do it for you in one tap.

You never need to remember these passwords. Your vault remembers them, and fills them in for you.

Make a password while saving a login

  1. Open the Bitwarden app and unlock your vault.
  2. Tap the button to add a new item, usually a + sign.
  3. Fill in the Name, Username and Website.
  4. Next to the Password box, tap the button to generate a password. It often looks like two curved arrows.
  5. Tap Select or Use this password if the app asks.
  6. Tap Save.

Use the Generator on its own

The app also has a Generator page.

  1. Tap Generator at the bottom of the app.
  2. A new password appears at the top.
  3. Tap the copy button to copy it.
  4. Paste it into the website's "new password" box.
  5. Then save it in your vault, so you do not lose it.

Changing a weak password

  1. Sign in to the website.
  2. Go to its settings and look for Change password.
  3. Use the generator to make a new password and copy it.
  4. Paste it into the website and save the change there.
  5. Open the item in your vault, tap Edit, paste the new password, and tap Save.

Always save the new password in your vault straight away. If you forget, use the website's "forgot password" link to set it again.

Good settings

The standard settings are already good. If you want to change them:

  • Length: 16 characters or more.
  • Keep capital letters, small letters and numbers turned on.
  • Special characters like ! or # help too, but a few websites do not accept them.

Do not use the generator for your master password. Your master password should be words you can remember. See choose a good master password.
