Everyday use

How do I save a copy of my passwords safely?

You can download a copy of everything in your vault with Export vault. Choose the password-protected option, and keep the file safe.

Your vault is already backed up on our server. You do not need a copy for everyday use.

But you may want your own copy. For example, before you cancel. This is called an export.

A normal export file is not locked. Anyone who opens it can read every password. Please choose the password-protected option, and delete the file when you no longer need it.

Export on a computer

This is the easiest way.

  1. Open https://secure-vault.dankore.com in your browser and sign in.
  2. Look for Export vault. It is usually under Tools.
  3. For the file type, choose the one that says password protected.
  4. Make up a password for the file. Write it down. You need it to open the file later.
  5. Type your master password to confirm it is you.
  6. Click Export vault and save the file.

Export in the phone app

  1. Open the Bitwarden app and unlock your vault.
  2. Tap Settings, then look for Vault, then Export vault.
  3. Choose the password-protected file type if you see it.
  4. Type your master password and confirm.
  5. Choose where to save the file.

The menu names can change a little between versions. If you cannot find it, the computer way always works.

Keep the file safe

  • Copy it to a USB stick and keep the stick with your emergency kit.
  • Then delete the file from your computer or phone.
  • Empty the Trash or Recycle Bin.
  • Do not email the file to yourself, and do not upload it to a website.

Using the copy later

You can bring this file into a vault again with Import data. See move passwords into the vault for where to find it.

If you cancel your plan, your vault stays open for 30 extra days so you can save a copy. We never hold your passwords hostage. See what happens if I cancel.
