Getting started
How do I choose a good master password?
Use four or more random words joined together. It is easy to remember and very hard to guess. Here is how to make one.
Your master password is the one password that opens your vault. It is the only one you need to remember from now on.
It needs to be easy for you to remember, and very hard for anyone else to guess.
Use four or more random words
The best way is a short list of random words, joined with dashes. We call this a passphrase.
Here is an example of the style: copper-lantern-river-mango.
Please do not use our example. Everyone can read this page. Make up your own words.
How to make your own
- Think of four words that have nothing to do with each other.
- Avoid names, birthdays, pets, addresses or favourite teams. Other people may know them.
- Avoid famous sayings, quotes or song lines.
- Join the words with dashes.
- Say it out loud a few times. Picture a small, silly scene with the words to help you remember.
A good trick is to open a book at a random page and pick a word. Do that four times.
Things to avoid
- Do not use a password you already use somewhere else.
- Do not make it short. Four words is the least. Five is even better.
- Do not store it in a note on your phone or in an email.
Write it on your emergency kit
Only you know your master password. Not even Dankore can see it or reset it. That is what keeps your vault safe.
So please write it down by hand on your emergency kit. Keep the kit somewhere safe, like a home safe or with your important papers.
- Sign in to your account page.
- Open your emergency kit and print it.
- Write your master password on it with a pen.
- Put it somewhere safe, and tell one trusted person where it is.
Never type your master password into our website. Only type it into the Bitwarden app or https://secure-vault.dankore.com.
If you ever forget it
Please read I forgot my master password and set up a trusted person now, while you remember it.
